APFNet Workshop on Forest Rehabilitation and Management (24 July - 4 August, 2017 Siem Reap, Cambodia)

During 24 July-04 August, 2017, the Workshop on Forest Rehabilitation and Management was organized by APFNet Kunming Training Center (APFNet-KTC) and Institute of Forest and Wildlife Research and Development (IRD) of Cambodia Forestry Administration in Siem Reap.There are 15 participants from 14 Asia-Pacific economies to attend the workshop, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Fiji, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, PNG, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Viet Nam. They shared their knowledge and experience on forestry management, as well as learnt lessons from each other.

The opening ceremony of the workshop on 25 July was chaired by Dr. Sokh Heng, Director of Institute of Forest and Wildlife Research and Development, Forestry Administration, Cambodia. Prof. Shen Lixin, Director of APFNet-KTC, Mr. Prak Marin, deputy Chief of Forestry Administration in Siem Reap and Mr. Pen Bunthoeun, Deputy Director of the Provincial Department of Agriculture joined the reception and made opening remarks.

 

Mr. Prak Marin and Mr. Pen Bunthoeun represented the Cambodian government and extended their sincere gratitude to all participants and distinguished guests. While they took this opportunity to see more cooperation of capacity building program and projects between the government of Cambodia and APFNet, and made a great efforts in forest resources and management in Asia-Pacific Region. Finally they wished the workshop make a great success through the joint efforts.

Prof. Shen expressed his special gratitude to Institute of Forest and Wildlife Research and Development, Forestry Administration, Cambodia and all efforts made by IRD. He pointed out APFNet-KTC has organized seventeen thematic training workshops since 2009, and sincerely hope to have more opportunities to cooperate with other economies in the regional capacity building.

In order to provide the maximum learning opportunity to the participants, the workshop structure is designed to four segments ---- thematic lectures, participant presentation, field trip and group work and discussions. During the 6 days indoor session, 6 international experts from Australia, the Netherlands, Philippines, Cambodia and China gave 11 lectures. All the participants also gave the presentations to share with each other. In addition to indoor learning session, field trip provides an opportunity for all participants to share knowledge in forest rehabilitation and management by visiting Khum Ream Forest Research Station, Nursery of Khun Ream Research Station, Memorial Tree Plantation, Research Plots of Forest Rehabilitation, Seed Source Area, Seed Orchard, Community Nursery, Forest Rehabilitation Plot and Local Livelihoods. At last two days after field visit, all the participants were divided into three groups and shared about forestry development and management profiles among economies in the Asia &Pacific Region besides keynote lectures given by resource persons in the morning.

The workshop was successfully concluded on 3 August in Siem Reap. Each group gave their group presentation and summaries via group discussion. And Dr. Sokh Heng, prof. Shen Lixin and Mr. Tea Kimsot, Director of the Provincial Department of Agriculture issued the workshop certificates and gave closing remarks to all participants. To sum up, APFNet workshop on Forest Rehabilitation and Management was round off in Seam Reap on 3 August, 2017 under strong support of Institute of Forest and Wildlife Research and Development of Cambodia Forestry Administration.
